Tsai-Ling Tseng’s paintings reveal a surreal and magical world populated by the cutest and most endearing creatures. These perfectly messy self portraits of bizarre or shameful moments overcome through hilarity are strangely relatable. They remind us, through the facial expressions of the critters, that some moments hold equal amounts of frustration and wonder. It can be essential to laugh in order to survive, perspective is everything. There is pain in rebellion, but equally important and present is hope. Tsai-Ling regularly creates works on paper as a way to release ideas for new paintings into the world, but this is the first time she is sharing these intimate moments with the public. You may recognize a past or future painting among some of the works offered in this collection, and I am so excited for her first New York solo show at Kapp Kapp gallery in January 2021! Tsai-Ling Tseng (b.1991 Taipei, Taiwan) received her MFA in the Painting and Drawing Department at School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018, and her BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in 2016. Tseng is a recipient of Shandaken Projects: Paint School fellowship in 2020; Anderson Ranch Arts Center Artists-in-Residence Award in 2021, the Mercedes Matter | Ambassador Middendorf Prize in 2019; as well as the Carrie Ellen Tuttle Fellowship from School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018.
