I’ve been absolutely enamored by the joyful work of the ever inventive Margot Bird for a few years now and am honored to offer two new works on paper she has recently created. Margot’s work has an enjoyable presence, a fantastical sense of color, and comes directly from what she is immediately affected by, often including internet memes. Initially, I was quickly drawn in by her aliens, poodles, and hybrids of the two, but am newly obsessed with her kittens series - morphing into literally every object or being you might imagine - and chances are Margot imagines wilder, more unique mash-ups than most. Kitten pizza, kitten fajitas, kitten body builders, kitten spaghetti, kittens with kittens for paws, and now colored pencil drawings of a kitten Three Legged Dragon and kitten Xenomorphs - each new piece makes me smile and fill up with a childlike sense of wonder - something desperately needed in our daily lives. Margot Bird (born Sioux City, IA) Lives and works in Brooklyn NY. She received her Bachelor of Arts & Sciences at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 2006. In Fall of 2018, she had her first solo exhibition at Sargent’s Daughters Gallery in New York City. In Summer of 2020 she had her second solo exhibition with Sidel & McElwreath. Her work has been included in numerous group shows throughout the US and Mexico, including Ladrón Galería in Mexico City, MX; Left Field Gallery in Los Osos, CA; Field Projects Gallery in New York City; Lorimoto Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; the Wassaic Projects Summer Exhibition in Wassaic, NY; the Bellevue Art Museum in Bellevue, WA; SPRING/BREAK Art Show NYC; 123 Astronaut Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; Festival Internacional Cultural Tierra Adentro in Aculco, MX; Yo Mama Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Stella Elkins Gallery in Philadelphia, PA; 244 Art Gallery in Mexico City, MX; Nola Darling in New York, NY; The Black Lodge in Seattle, WA; Blaubak Gallery of Modern Art in Kirkland, WA; and Firecracker Studios in Madison, WI. From the beginning of 2016 until May 2017, Margot Bird worked tirelessly in a self-motivated intensive residency in Mexico City. In addition, she has painted over two dozen murals throughout the US and Mexico.
