The often perverse, but always playful technicolor dreamscapes of fantastical nature will leave you both happy and hungry. Created with watercolors, colored pencils, pens, and sometimes acrylic, the longer you spend looking at each piece, the greater the reward. As the state of this country is in a total flux, the immigration lawyer costs for G’s pending VISA renewal were increased significantly, so I decided to do a sale of her work in order to offset these fees and help keep her in the states. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS SALE WILL GO DIRECTLY TO G TO HELP HER WITH HER VISA COSTS AND I WILL NOT BE COLLECTING A PERCENTAGE OF SALES FOR MY EFFORTS.
HyeGyeong Choi is a Korean painter residing in the US for the past 9 years where she continues her practice in Brooklyn. She holds a BFA from Chung Ang University in Korea and a MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a Korean woman she has been subject to commentary or criticism of her womanhood, which is closely tied to beauty and sex. Taboos revolving around sexuality are deeply embedded in Korean society and inevitably shape how women are treated and objectified - resulting in a high level of sexual crime. HyeGyong’s work addresses these points of social friction head on, dealing with body image, identity, gender, and sexuality. For this reason, her work in Korea has been censored, and most of her paintings were blurred out when she was featured on the reality TV show, Art Star Korea.
Choi’s work has been included in exhibitions at Zolla/Liberman Gallery, Chicago, Seoul Auction in South Korea, The Stolbun Collection in NYC, Slow Gallery in Chicago, Adah Rose Gallery in Washington D.C, Sine Project in Brooklyn and many others. Her work has been featured and written by Washington Post, Artsy, Hyperallergic, Art News City, Chicago Tribune, Sixty Inches From Art Center, Gay Letter, and ADF Web Magazine.
