“I've noticed a rapid growth of grey hairs on my head in the last year...not sure if it's a physical manifestation of our turbulent surroundings, reduced exposure to the sun, or simply me just getting older; most likely, all of the above. Conjuring thoughts on mortality of self and that of the planet...my brain toggles rapidly between: how we can fix this mess; and how perhaps mother earth just needs a break from us all. And if by the year 2077 (my 100th birthday), if humans no longer exist, what will the world look like? And will objects that have been quietly observing our behaviors for centuries pick up where we left off in personified form?” - Michael Hambouz

Michael Hambouz (b. Niles, Michigan, 1977) is a Palestinian-American multidisciplinary artist, musician, and independent curator based in Brooklyn, NY. Hambouz creates technicolor works commingling the familiar and otherworldly as observed in his dreams, interventions with unseen forces, and symbolic references to memories growing up the child of a displaced refugee in the rural Midwest. He experiments with process, mutations and rearticulations, that result in abstract paintings and prints, intricate paper cut outs and animations.

Solo exhibitions include Brooklyn Academy of Music (Brooklyn, NY), chashama (New York, NY), Kayrock (Brooklyn, NY), The Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph, MI), 3S Artspace (Portsmouth, NH), and a 20-year survey exhibition at Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH) in 2018. He has participated in select group exhibitions at GROWROOM//SHOWROOM (Brooklyn, NY), The National Arts Club (New York, NY), Andrew Edlin Gallery (New York, NY), IPCNY (New York, NY), and Lorimoto Gallery (Ridgewood, NY). Hambouz is an avid supporter of the arts and social justice, contributing work to benefit auctions hosted by Luhring Augustine, Cheim & Read, Bridget Donahue, Honey Ramka, Yossi Milo, and Pioneer Works. His art and curatorial work has been featured in Artnet News, Hyperallergic, Vice, Quaranzine, Create! Magazine, and Design Milk. His work can be found in the permanent collections of Antioch College, Comunilife Woodhull Residence, Fidelity Corporate Art Collection, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Niles History Center.
