Still Lifes on Paper

Talia Levitt’s masterfully painted maximalist still lifes are the inquisitive viewer’s dream, and a true gift from this generous artist. Between every luscious texture and trompe l'oeil recreation there is something new to discover. While she buries references for painter viewer’s specifically, they can be appreciated with or without a decade of privileged education and historical reference to stand upon, rendering them necessary paintings in my book: the humble art we need right now. All you need is a little bit of curiosity and some eyeballs to hurl yourself into Talia’s re-created world. That curiosity is mirrored in these works on paper in that, though more gestural than her paintings on canvas, these pieces act as a conceptual and compositional playground in which Levitt experiments and informs her larger paintings. This new series provides a woman’s perspective for every day of the week.

Talia Levitt (b. 1989) lives and works in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA from Hunter College (2019) where she received a Goldberg Presidential scholarship, and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2011). Her still life paintings feature studio and domestic objects which reference the act of making in an effort to create meta narratives and often implicate the viewer(f) as the artist. Her paintings engage with and poke at the history of still life painting as a marginalized and anti academic genre. Levitt has attended residencies and apprenticeships at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, The Vermont Studio Center, Rancho Linda Vista, and The Bread and Puppet Theater. She received a Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant in 2019, a Kossak Travel Grant in 2017 and a Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Grant in Painting in 2016. Her work was featured in the #141 Northeast 2019 issue of New American Paintings.
